Ballajura was first settled in 1905 when Ernest Maltby Kerruish, an immigrant from the Isle of Man, established a farm he named Ballajora. Fellow Manx settlers John Creer and Arthur Eaton helped clear the land, though Kerruish later moved due to poor soil.

Their names, along with Matilda Bennett’s, are reflected in Ballajura Primary School houses and local landmarks such as Bennett Brook. In the 1980s, Ballajura expanded with the Lakeshore and Lakes Estate subdivisions, known for lake-side living and higher-value homes. A proposal to rename these areas was rejected to avoid dividing the suburb.
